Postgraduate Programmes

M.Des in Animation

The Master of Design (M.Des) in Animation provides the opportunity for postgraduate students to explore concepts, aesthetics and narratives within the language of animation and sound. The programme of study is designed to provide a foundation in the processes, craft and theoretical background required to develop a research project within this medium. It promotes the production of work, through individual or group-based research, that is conceptual, aesthetically challenging and wide-ranging in its use of narrative languages and structures.  Please click here for further information on the programme.

M.Des in Sound for the Moving Image

The Masters of Design (M.Des) in Sound for the Moving Image offers the opportunity for postgraduate students to engage with the craft and creative practice of sound production applied to film, animation, television, new media, electronic games and visual art, as well as equipping students with the tools required to develop a research project within this field. The programme promotes production of original work, through individual or group-based research, that is conceptually-driven, aesthetically challenging and wide-ranging in its use of sound design and music production/compostion. Please click here for further information on the programme.

MPhil (DDS)

This research based programme of 60 weeks duration is open to students who have completed the MDes in Animation programme  or who have similar qualifications from other institutions. This year is focused on the production of a significant piece of animation through a process of research. Students propose and self-direct an imaginative programme of study with supervision from staff. Please click here for further information on the programme.

PhD - Doctor of Philosophy

The DDS has a growing number of PhD students investigating various aspects of advanced 3D visualisation and interaction. Doctoral students work alongside staff and contribute to the growth of the Studio at all levels. They are encouraged to publish their work; attend and present at seminars and conferences; and contribute to ongoing and future DDS research projects.

Support is delivered through postgraduate research training programmes. Ph.D. topics cover a variety of subjects in very different areas of application. Recent examples include: The

  • Role of 3D Visualisation in Learning and Teaching
  • Sensory Assistance Using Multipurpose Virtual and Haptic Interfaces in Automotive Applications
  • Combined 2D and 3D interface for MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) design and review
